Abstract

Malleable iron is produced by introducing into a cupola charge of iron a ferro silicon-boron alloy containing Si 15-90 per cent, B 0.01-0.2 per cent, Fe and incidental impurities the remainder, this alloy being present in the charge in sufficient amount to add to the iron 0.0005-0.003 per cent B, melting the charge and casting and then heat treating the iron. The iron after casting may be heated gradually to within the range 1600-1750 DEG F., held there for the required time and then cooled at a rate less than 10 DEG F. per hour through the transformation range to produce malleable iron free from pearlitic constituent.
