[Also in Group XXIX] An hydraulic starting motor of the revolving cylinder block swash-plate type has a valve controlling the admission of liquid to the motor. A valve spool 79 is actuated by a lever 66 which also engages a starter pinion 61 with a driven gear 60; a chamber 75 communicates with a source of pressure and a chamber 53 with the motor inlet. The spool 79 is formed with slots 83 and is so actuated by the lever 66 that just prior to the engagement of the gears 61, 60 the leading ends of the slots pass a sealing ring 88 between the chambers 75, 53 so that a small quantity of liquid passes to the motor to rotate gear 61 slowly to avoid clashing of the gear teeth.
