Abstract

796,476. Engine turning-gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 2, 1956 [Nov. 7, 1955], No. 33461/56. Class 7(5) [Also in Group XXIX] A hydraulic engine-starter motor is of the swash-plate type and has a rotatable cylinder block 34 splined to an output shaft 26 and mounted by means of needle bearings 44, 46 in a stationary housing. The output shaft drives the input member of an overrunning clutch 135, the output member of which has a spline connection with a pinion 130. The clutch 135 and pinion 130 are shiftable to the right by a lever assembly to engage the pinion with a flywheel ring gear 132 of an engine. The lever assembly also actuates a spindle 96 of a valve 80 controlling the supply of liquid to the inlet kidney port of the motor. The lever assembly is biased by a torsion spring to maintain the clutch and gear 130 and spindle 96 in their left-hand positions in which spindle 96 blocks communication between a valve inlet chamber 92 and an outlet chamber 78 which leads to the inlet kidney. When the lever assembly is actuated, the pinion 130 is shifted into full engagement with the ring gear 132 before the valve spindle 96 is shifted to its fully opened position. Should the teeth of gears 130, 132 abut, and prevent engagement, further movement of the lever assembly is permitted by compression of a spring 136 between the clutch and pinion 130. If the splines on the clutch and pinion are helical this further movement will effect limited rotation of the pinion. The spring is compressed until abutment occurs between parts of the clutch and the pinion, in which position of the lever assembly the valve spindle is in a position in which ports 108 and a port 111 are aligned with chambers 92, 78 to give a restricted flow of liquid to the motor to produce a slow rotation. When gears 130, 132 are fully engaged valve ports 108, 110 are aligned with chambers 92, 78 to give full flow to the motor.
