Abstract
963,394. Clutch combinations. FRANCAISE DU FERODO S.A. Oct. 4, 1960 [Oct. 5, 1959; Nov. 30, 1959], No. 34033/60. Heading F2C. A transmission comprises an hydraulic torque converter having a pump P connected to an input shaft M, a one-way mounted reactor R and a turbine T fast with a driven shaft m 1 connected to an input shaft of mechanical gearing (not shown), and an hydraulically engaged friction clutch having driving plates fast in rotation with the pump P and a driven disc 22 splined to a driven shaft m 2 connected to a second input shaft of the mechanical gearing. The driving plates of the clutch comprise a backing plate 26 integral with a casing 13 joining the pump P to the input shaft, and a presser plate 27 which is splined to the casing and forms a partition between clutch chambers 14a, 14b. Restricted orifices 38 are formed at the periphery of the plate 27. In operation, a pump permanently supplies liquid to the converter through a conduit 30, and liquid leaves the converter through two paths, a first path including a space 33 between the turbine and the reactor and a restricted passage 35, and a second path including a space 34 between the pump and the turbine, the orifices 38, the clutch chamber 14b, a space between the driven shafts m 1 , m 2 and a conduit 40 controlled by means of a valve. To disengage the clutch the valve is closed so that the pressure in the clutch chamber 14b rises and the clutch disengages. To engage the clutch the valve is opened to allow relatively free exhaust of liquid from the clutch chamber 14b. In a modification, Fig. 3, a control valve 42 is used, the pump is connected to a line 44 and in the disengaged position shown supplies the converter through a line 45, and supplies the clutch chamber 14b through a non-return valve 47 and a line 40. Liquid leaves the torque converter through a line 36 and restriction 51. To engage the clutch the valve 42 is moved to the left, closing the clutch line 40 to the supply and opening it to exhaust. The line 36 from the converter is closed so that pressure builds up in the converter and is reduced in the clutch chamber to ensure engagement. Modified control valves are also described. In the transmission described the driven disc 22 rotates slower than the turbine when the clutch is disengaged; for applications where the disc rotates faster than the turbine the apertures 38 are formed in the inner periphery of the plate 27 instead of in the outer periphery.
