Abstract

778,194. Electrically-actuated valves. HOSKINS, S. W. June 11, 1954 [March 13, 1953], No. 7032/53. Class 135. A solenoid valve having the valve mechanism arranged within the solenoid 2 and the controlled fluid flowing through or around a solenoid plunger 24 having a lost-motion connection with the valve 28 to pull or assist in pulling the valve off its seat 38 comprises a main valve assembly slidably guided within the solenoid, a passage 39 joining the front and back of the main valve 28 which is closed, when the solenoid is de-energized, partly by an excess fluid pressure force on the back, the fluid reaching the front and back from the interior of the solenoid open to the inlet 11, an auxiliary valve 37 slidable within the main valve assembly for opening the passage 39 when the solenoid is energized, an auxiliary plunger 33 associated with the valve 37 and slidably guided in the main plunger, the latter being slidably guided within the solenoid. When the coil is energized the plunger moves towards the pole 13 until a slot 36 engages a pin 35 on the auxiliary plunger 33 loaded by spring 40 and carrying the auxiliary valve 37 seating over the main valve passage 39. Normally air passes from the inlet 11 through passages 12 and ports 25, 27, through passages around or through the plunger and around the cup 29 carrying the main valve to act via passages 32 in the interior 31 of the cup. When the auxiliary valve is unseated the pressure behind the cup is relieved and the main valve is pulled off its seat by the auxiliary valve assisted by the pressure acting in the space 41 in front of the main valve. In a modification the cup slides in the plunger.
