Abstract
264,708. Ellis, G. B., (Soc. pour la Fabrication de la Soie Rhodiaseta). Sept. 18, 1925. Apparatus for making filaments.- In order to control the temperature conditions at the spinning dies while maintaining in this region an atmosphere relatively rich in solvent vapours, for the purposes of controlling the section and formation of the filaments as indicated in Specifications 236,393, 238,842 and 248,696, a portion of the atmosphere is withdrawn at an intermediate region f of the cell and is returned to the region h of the spinning dies without any reduction in the proportion of solvent vapours carried by the atmosphere, but permissibly after passage through a temperature-controlling device such as a heater; there is thus created a closed auxiliary circuit of the gaseous medium. Another portion of the atmosphere is withdrawn at a suitable point, for example at the point k, for the recuperation of the solvents, fresh atmosphere being admitted to compensate for that so withdrawn. There may be arranged a separate auxiliary circuit for each cell the flow of the gaseous medium being produced by individual propelling devices or by varying the density of the medium, as by heating the external circuit. Alternatively, in the case of a group of cells, the withdrawn atmosphere from the individual cells may be collected in a common collector e, and after passing through a propelling device may be delivered to a second collector g from which the gaseous medium is distributed to the cells, equality of flow in the several cells being attained by the means described in Specification 233,384. Preferably, the cells a are of the minimum diameter, are either cylindrical or tapered towards the outlet, and are provided at their lower ends with funnel-shaped members d as described in Specification 218,913, these members having at their apices an outlet opening for the filaments, such opening also constituting the inlet for the gaseous medium. The connections f, h, k for the inlet and outlet of the gaseous medium are preferably of annular form, as described in Specification 233,384: and the lower portions of the cells are provided with heating devices c preferably arranged in the manner described in Specification 233,384. Openings may he made in the walls of the cells to permit a free exchange of heat between the atmosphere in the cells and the actual heating elements.
