Abstract
775,720. Batching logs. SHIELDS, H. F. H. Dec. 20, 1955 [May 6, 1955], No. 13204/55. Class 78 (1) A batching device for logs comprises a hopper 10 into which the logs are fed to lie parallel to one another, gripping means 30 to grip the logs, and floor 17. In the first stage, the floor is raised and the gripping means are withdrawn for the logs to rest on said floor. In the second stage, the floor is partially lowered and the gripping means then operated to grip the logs. In the third stage, the floor is fully lowered to allow its layer of logs to be discharged by ram plate 26 into carriage 40. As shown, the gripping means are bars 30 operated by rams 35, the pivoted levers 36 engaging shoulders formed on the bars against the force of springs 34; the floor 17 is raised and lowered by chains 18 driven by motor 22; and ram plate 26 is reciprocated by ram 25. The logs are discharged on to carriage 40 carried by structure 42 supported by wheels 43. Alternatively, the said gripping means may comprise inflatable rubber bags.
