A rotary gas producer grate and its associated stationary gasification medium supply conduit are radially subdivided into compartments. The producer shown comprises a double-walled shaft 1, a dependent sealing-ring 3 of which dips into water in an annular ash-pit 4. The bottom of the latter comprises an annular plate 5 upon which is mounted a grate consisting of portions 7, 6. The plate 5 has a sealing ring 15 and a flange 10 which rests upon rollers 11 mounted upon the producer base-plate 12. Rotation of plate 5, grate and ash-pit is effected by gearing 8, 9. The grate portion 7 has apertures 27 and the grate is divided radially by partitions 17, Fig. 2, into compartments 16. Opening into the grate from below is a stationary gasification medium supply conduit 13, the upper part of which is radially divided into compartments 28 corresponding to the grate compartments 16. Each compartment 28 has a damper 18 and a conduit 21 through which may be injected either steam through a valve 22, or oxygen or oxygen-enriched air through a valve 24, or a mixture thereof. The adjustment of damper 18 and valves 22, 24, may be effected automatically through temperature-sensitive mechanism 26 which may be located on the grate or within the shaft 1 just above the grate. The upper ends of compartments 28 terminate in radially-extending nozzles 30, Fig. 3, for directing the gasification medium into the appropriate grate compartments 16. Compartments 16, 28 may be further sub-divided to enable the distribution of gasification medium to radially spaced areas of the grate to be controlled.
