Abstract

<PICT:1070009/C4-C5/1> A shaft gasifier for the gasification of a static bed of an ash-containing solid carbonaceous fuel comprises a plurality of tuyeres distributed round the lower part of the inner wall of the shaft, means for causing gasifying agent to issue simultaneously from some of the tuyeres at one rate and from the remaining tuyeres at a different rate, valve means for changing the rate from each tuyere from one of the rates to the other, and automatic timing means for the valve. The gasifier is operated at a temperature such that the ash collects in liquid form beneath the fuel bed, from where it is continuously discharged. The velocity from some of the tuyeres is chosen to give preferential central gasification and that from the remainder to give preferential peripheral gasification of the fuel, and each change is made to give no alteration in the rate of supply of the gasifying agent from all the tuyeres collectively. This may be effected by operating half the tuyeres at each chosen velocity and by simultaneously changing both halves from one to the other velocity. The gasifying agent may be oxygen, air, oxygen-enriched air, a mixture of any of the foregoing with one or both of steam or CO2, or hydrogen. Atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure may be used. As shown, six tuyeres, designated 5 and 6, projecting into the shaft are supplied by pipes 7 and 8 with gasifying agent obtained from main supply pipe 9 via branch pipes 10, 11, 12 of which branch pipe 11 leads to two-way valve 13. Valve 13 communicates either with pipe 14 or with pipe 15 and in each of pipes 10, 12, 11 is a nozzle or orifice plate 16 which controls the rate of supply of gasifying agent.
