Abstract

773,744. Applying liquids to webs. KUSTERS, E. July 20, 1955'[July 29, 1954; Jan. 5, 1955], No. 21061/55. Class 140. Apparatus for the treatment of textile fabric and like fabrics with liquids wherein the surface of a drum or roller round which the fabric passes in a liquid receptacle is either covered with a porous or absorbent material, capable of taking up liquid, and is resilient and formed to allow the liquid to pass therethrough to the interior of the drum or roller and the drum or roller is mounted eccentrically whereby so it rotates, vibratory movement is imparted thereto thereby ensuring a flow of liquid relative to the fabric backwards and forwards from one surface to the other of the fabric as it travels with the drum or roller so that all parts of the fabric are thoroughly soaked with the liquid. Textile material is passed round a drum 1 having a porous or absorbent resilient cover 2 eccentrically mounted to rotate on a shaft 3 in a trough 4 of treating liquid. The drum is either frictionally driven or is driven through .suitable gearing. The material is pressed against the surface of the drum by balls 9 floating on the treating liquid and retained in position by plates 10, and by heavy balls 5 in a container 6 retained at the ends by partitions. A roller 8 exerts pressure on the drum before the material passes under the balls 5. In a modification, the drum is surrounded by rollers mounted on axes and alternately pressed into the porous coating and released therefrom by the vibratory movement of the drum. The leading in roller may be driven using the same drive as that for the exit roller external to the drum, the material being pressed by a further roller. In a further modification the drum is formed of a wire mesh sleeve mounted by supports on a hollow shaft eccentically mounted.
