815,433. Coating webs. STEEN, C., DONAHUE, E. L., and DONAHUE, M. S., [trading as D & S PROCESSING CO.]. Sept. 13, 1955 [Sept. 13, 1954], No. 26234/55. Class 140. [Also in Groups XV and XVI] A machine for continuously applying a plastic pattern to the surface of permeable material, e.g. cloth, plastic or paper, comprises a driven conveyer for the material, a rotatable, hollow, apertured stencil containing liquid plastic in contact with the material and driven thereby, a doctor blade within the stencil extending to the inner surface to cut off the plastic at a predetermined height and elongated controlled heating means surrounding a conveyer beyond the stencil. Material 3 is fed from a reel 1 round idler rollers 4, then between an adjustably mounted roller 11 driven by a motor 12 and a cylindrical stencil 14. The coated material is conveyed by an endless conveyer belt 34 through an oven 8 with inlets 37 for heated air then to cooling and storage racks. The stencil is mounted between rollers 15 rotatably mounted in brackets 17, the stencil being rotated by the material 3. The stencil comprises a cylindrical drum having apertures 21 through which liquid plastic 28 contained between a fixed blade 22 and a curved knife 24 passes to the material. The fixed blade is supported by a shaft in a bracket 23<SP>1</SP> and the knife blade is rotatably mounted on brackets 27. The liquid plastic may comprise dioctyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate with polyvinyl chloride.
