[Also in Group XVI] A fabric winding machine comprises in combination a pair of parallel rotatable winding drums 22, 23 and a cutter interposed between the drums having a position above the level of the top of the drums and a position below the level of the top of the drums, the cutter having a gate frame 40 in which are mounted a plurality of rotatable staggered overlapping knives extending transversely to the direction of cloth to be wound. As shown, the winding drums 22, 23 are driven by a chain 26, while a winding core 28 is pivotally mounted in jaws supported by uprights 27 the pressure of the jaws on the core 28 being controlled, during winding, by a brake 30. When the roll wound on the core 28 has attained a certain size the roll is transferred from the drum 23 to the drum 22, by jaws 31 on pivoted arms 32 actuated by hydraulic cylinders 34. When the roll reaches the required size the fabric being wound is cut transversely by the cutter upon actuation of the frame 40 by rams 45 slidable in cylinders 46. The cutter comprises a plurality of overlapping knives 60, 70, Fig. 3, having adjacent plane sides. Each knife 60 is keyed to a shaft 56 and is engaged by a bush 62 threaded on the shaft 56; bearings 54 and 55 support the shaft 56 and bush 62. A pinion 66 screwed to the shaft 56 is driven by pinions 97 and 98 by a chain 94 and sprocket 95 mounted on the frame 40, each pair of adjacent knives being driven in opposite directions. The cutters 60, Fig. 6, preferably have fluted blades 110 which form teeth 111, and may be of high-speed steel.
