Abstract

725,146. Cutting-machines. HALLDEN, K. W. Jan. 8, 1953, No. 653/53. Class 31 (1). [Also in Groups V and XXII] A device for cutting longitudinally moving paper and other sheet material into appropriate lengths includes a first rotated roller having a peripheral shear blade thereon and mounted in a fixed frame and a second rotated roller having a peripheral shear blade and mounted in a carrier movable to and from said first cutterroller by an eccentric rotated through a changespeed drive at a speed suitably selected relative to that of the cutter rollers so that the shear blades are close enough for cutting to take place only once in every n revolutions of the cutter rollers thus to cut the sheet into lengths of n units. Sheet strip 87 is fed between an upper cutter roller 24, fast on a driven shaft 27 journalled in a frame 14, and a lower cutter roller 34, fast on a shaft 33 journalled in a pair of parallel carrier plates 16 pivotally mounted about a shaft 18 secured to the frame 14. The lower cutter roller shaft 33 is driven from the upper cutter roller shaft 27 through a gear 28, fast on the shaft 27 and of lesser diameter than the cutter roller 24, gear 29 mounted on the frame 14, gear 31 loosely mounted on the shaft 18 and a gear 32, fast on the shaft 33 and of lesser diameter than the cutter roller 34, thus ensuring rotation of the cutter roller 34 for all positions of the carrier plates 16. Eccentrics 38 fast on a shaft 37, journalled in a fixed frame and driven through a change-speed drive, fit within blocks 39 slidable in the plates 16, so as to move the lower cutter roller 34 into shearing position once every appropriate number of revolutions of the cutters. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the plates 16 are slidably instead of pivotally mounted in the frame 14.
