Abstract

772,059. Covering tubes with resilient tubing. BURN, L. A. Sept. 6, 1955 [Sept. 9, 1954], No. 26114/54. Class 108(3). A method of covering a metal tube 18 with polyvinyl chloride tubing 17, comprises inserting a tapered plug 19 into one end of the tube 18, applying one end of the tubing 17 to the plug 19, supplying compressed air to the other end of the tubing 17, sliding the first end of the tubing 17 axially over the tube 18 while controlling the escape of air from the first end of the tubing 17, and finally cutting off the air supply. In the construction shown, the tubing 17 is continuous with a supply reel 21, the air being supplied by a pipe 22 via the bearing of the reel 21. The other end of the pipe 22 is connected to an air supply line 22a via a foot-operated valve 23 which also controls the supply of air to a device 24. The latter comprises a piston, Fig. 4 (not shown) which is adapted to close the tube 17 after the required length has been fed onto the tube 18, and has been cut-off from the main supply of tubing 17. This is to prevent air escaping from the severed end of the tubing 17. The plug 19 may comprise a cutter, Fig. 3 (not shown) for severing the tube 17. Control of the escape of air from the open end of the tubing 17 may be controlled manually, but as shown in Fig. 5, the end of the tube 17 is secured by a clamp 34 to a block 32 slidable on the tube 18. Escape of air between the tubing 17 and the tube 18 is controlled by pressure applied to a rubber annulus 36 by an adjustable screwed collar 35. As shown in Fig. 2, the tube 18 is supported by a plug 11 which may have a spigot portion, Fig. 6 (not shown), the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the tube 18. This permits the block 32 to be drawn over the whole length of the tube 18. An adjustable limit stop is provided. As applied to the covering of conduits connected by elbows or junction boxes, the latter may be sprayed with the polyvinyl chloride to provide a continuous coating. Tubular furniture or conduit may be covered by a series of lengths of tubing of different colour, bonded together at their joints. The air pressure used may vary between 50 and 200 lbs. /sq. inch.
