Abstract
833,997. Angular bending; mandrels; fining. FLEXONICS CORPORATION. March 1, 1956 [March 4, 1955], No. 6513/56. Class 83 (4). A tube is bent while supported internally by a flexible mandrel and fluid pressure. A tube 48 to be bent is fed over a mandrel rod 36 and positioned thereon by an appropriate stop arm 38 abutting its rear end. The front end of the tube extends over a flexible mandrel 130 on the rod 36, said mandrel 130 comprising a cylindrical plug 120, a rubber sealing ring 124 and ball members 128, pivotally connected to one another and to the plug 120. The tube supported by the mandrel lies between a wiper die 44 and a bending form 114 on the one hand and a pressure die 58 and a clamp die 108 on the other hand. The pressure die 58 is backed by rollers 72 on a bracket 70 adjustable towards the tube by screw means 82, the clamp die 108 is carried by a bracket 96 adjustable towards the tube by screw means 100, the bracket 96 and the die 108 being swingable about an axis 92 about which the bending form 114 is rotatable. An end plug 132 is inserted into the extending end of the tube 48 and comprises a hollow cylinder 134 within which is mounted a hollow pistonrod 136 with a flat head 140. A rubber ring 142 positioned between the head 140 and the end of the cylinder 134 is expanded to grip the tube by movement of the rod 136 by a screwnut 144 threaded on its outer end. Water under pressure is supplied to the interior of the pipe through a hose 150 and bore 146 of the rod 136. Hydraulic means, not shown, then rotate the clamp die 108 and bending form 114 about the axis 92 to bend the tube, while supported internally by the flexible mandrel 130 and hydraulic pressure, around the form, the tube being pulled over the mandrel 130. The ring 124 may be omitted.
