Abstract

1,167,220. Pipe joints. GAS COUNCIL. 13 Aug., 1968 [15 Aug., 1967], No. 37424/67. Heading F2G. In order to repair the old sealing ring 3 in a spigot-and-socket pipe joint without allowing it to blow out when the backing-up ring 4 is withdrawn, the sealing ring is held in position by a thin sleeve 9 forced under the backing-up ring before it is withdrawn. A new sealing ring 21 is then placed around the sleeve and on top of the old sealing ring, and the backing-up ring is reinstated to compress both sealing rings. The sleeve 9 is made up of two semi-cylindrical shells 7, 8 held together by a band 10 and clamp 11. The sleeve has an end flange 12 by means of which it is pushed along the pipe by bolts 19. The leading edge of the sleeve may be angled, slotted and flared, or serrated, to suit various circumstances.
