Abstract

789,969. Inserting rubber hose into an outer tubular sheath. ROBERTS & SONS, Ltd., A. July 31, 1956 [Aug. 25, 1955], No. 24432/55. Class 108(3) Means for inserting a high pressure hose 12 into a tubular rubber sheath 11 of an internal diameter less than the external diameter of the hose 12, comprises a nozzle 19 connected to a source of compressed air (not shown) and received in one end of the sheath 11, an aligned rigid tubular guide 16 to receive the hose 12, and a double-acting compressed air cylinder 13 actuating a ram 15 working in the guide 16. Pipes 17, 18, leading from respective ends of the cylinder 13 are connected to the source of compressed air via a valve, the arrangement being such that when compressed air is supplied to the nozzle 19, it is also applied to the pipe 18. When the compressed air is cut off from the nozzle 19 it is connected to the pipe 17 and the pipe 18 is open to exhaust. In operation, one end of the hose 12 is inserted into the end of the sheath 11 remote from the nozzle and axial pressure is applied to the other end of the hose 12 by the ram 15 under the action of air pressure from the pipe 18, while the sheath 11 is expanded by compressed air forced into it from the nozzle. The sheath 11 is supported by a channel member 10. The invention is applicable to the vulcanization of high pressure hose by the method described in Specification 789,968 [Group XXVIII], the sheath 11 applying the necessary radial compression to the hose 12. After vulcanization, the sheath 11 may be removed from the hose 12 by applying its end once more to the nozzle 19, and drawing out the hose 12 while pressure air is injected into the sheath 11.
