Abstract
771,976. Extruding; shearing. BALDWIN - LIMA - HAMILTON CORPORATION. March 22, 1955 [April 5, 1954], No. 8289/55. Class 83 (4). A press for extruding metal, particularly heated billets of light metal, copper or brass, has a slide 34 disposed adjacent the press platen 10 and movable transversely from the extrusion position, Fig. 2, to an inoperative position, Fig. 5, the movement of the slide being effective for severing the extruded product 32 from the discard 60, 22 and the slide being operated by two separate actuating means one of which 70 is of small power and is effective during the entire stroke of the slide and the other 74 is of short stroke and high power and is effective only during the severing operation. The slide 34 moves in guides 50, 52 on the press platen 10 and has an oblique slot 38 for receiving the extrusion die 30, and an aperture 62 through which an unextruded billet may be ejected from the container by the press ram 14. A double-acting pneumatic motor 70 has its piston-rod 80 connected to an arm 84 secured to the slide 34; this motor moves the slide through its full stroke in both directions. During the severing operation a hydraulic motor 74 is operated, whereby its piston-rod 96 presses on the adjacent end of the slide to cause shearing- of the extrusion 32 between edges 54, 56. Motor 74 may be doubleacting or its piston may be retracted by the return movement of the slide. The stroke of slide is limited in both directions by adjustable stops 102, 108 and the working stroke of the motor 74 may be limited by a stop surface 112, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by limit switches. The press ram uses a dummy block 16 which usually adheres to the discard 22 and is removed therewith in the inoperative position of the slide 34 when the die 30 can also be replaced. In an alternative embodiment the die 30 may be inserted into the container liner.
