Abstract

1,193,848. Extrusion press. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. 18 Oct., 1968 [18 Oct., 1967], No. 47392/67. Heading B3P. [Also in Division B5] An extrusion press comprises a container 1 for receiving a billet 6, a die 4 positioned at one end of the container, a ram positioned at the other end of the container and having a pressing stem 7 displaceable towards and away from the die 4, means for producing relative movement between the die and the container in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the container and means arranged to continuously produce an electrical signal which is representative of the position of the pressing stem 7 with respect to the die 4 and/or means arranged to continuously produce an electrical signal which is representative of the position of the container 1 with respect to the die. After extrusion of the billet 6 the container 1 is moved relative to the ram away from the die 4 and a crop shear 12 separates the discard and a pressure disc 8 from the die face. The means for producing a continuous electric signal comprises a stationary potentiometer 15 whose wiper 14 is coupled to the pressing stem 7 so that a signal on the wiper is representative of the position of the stem 7 with respect to the stationary die 4. Similarly a wiper 16 of a stationary potentiometer 17 is coupled to the container 1.
