(Cl. 207-2) This invention relates to an extrusion press and more particularly to a extrusion press in which the stem ofthe press is arranged to be retracted into the ram of the master cylinder.
The principal object of the invention is to provision of an extrusion press in which the stern of the ram can be retracted to increase the speed of operation and decrease the size of the press.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hydraulic extrusion press in which the stem of the press is movable relative to the rarn and thereby facilitates the shortening of the press length and saves time in billet changes.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a hydraulic extrusion press in which the usual length of the press has been reduced by one-third due to the ability of the stem of the ram to be retracted thereinto at such time as the billets are changed in the press.
The hydraulic extrusion press disclosed herein comprises an improvement in hydraulic extrusion presses of the sort used for extruding metals under relatively high pressure. Such presses have heretofore included a main cylinder with a rarn movable hydraulically therein and provided with an elongated stern of a length suflcient to permit the charging of a billet into a billet container behind the die of the extrusion press and of sutlicient length to push the billet out of the container through the die. The hydraulic extrusion presses heretofore known in the art therefore required considerable door space to accommodate the necessary length of the cylinder, ram, stem, billet container and die and the space therebetween for positioning a billet in the container and they required that the ram be retracted hydraulically so as to move the stem out of the container and a sufficient distance therefrom to permit the billet to be positioned therein.
The present invention relates to the same type of press modied by the formation of the ram with a second cylinder therein and the formation of the stem as a piston mounted in this second cylinder. Means is provided to impart double action to the stern so that it can be moved hydraulically inwardly of the ram and outwardly thereof. A latch is also provided to latch the stem in outermost position whereby the full force of the ram may be exerted through the stem in the usual manner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE l is a side view of an extrusion press with parts broken away and parts in cross section and showing the stern in extended position.
FIGURE 2 is a side view of an extrusion press with parts broken away and parts in cross section and showing the stern in retracted position.
By referring to the drawings and FIGURE l in particular, it will be seen that the improved extrusion press comprises a base mounting a cylinder 11 having a ram 12 reciprocally mounted therein, the forward end of the "ice ram 12 being engaged upon and secured to a crosshead 13. A bed 14 is positioned in spaced relation to the base 10 and cylinder 11 and serves to position a billet container 15 and a die standing mounting a set of removable extrusion dies 16 in axial alignment with the billet container 15 and the ram 12. The ram 12 has a secondary cylinder 17 formed axially therein and a stern 18 is reciprocally mounted in the secondary cylinder 17 so as to be movable relative to the ram 12. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, tierods 19 interconnect the base structure 10 and cylinder 11l with the die stand on the bed 14 and the cross head 13 is apertured and engaged upon the tie rods 19 so as to be supported thereby. The cylinder 11 is provided with a hydraulic fluid passageway 20 by means of which hydraulic fluid from a suitable pressure source (not shown) may be directed into the cylinder 11 so as to move the ram 12 outwardly of the cylinder 11 at it is customary in hydraulic extrusion presses. Separate means is provided to return the ram. The ram 12 is provided with a secondary passageway 21 therein which communicates with the secondary cylinder 17 therein and extends toa point therein adjacent the cross head 13 where a high pressure flexible hose 22 communicates therewith and extends to a vsuitable source of liuid pressure. The stem 18 is therefore capable of being moved outwardly of the ram 12 by hydraulic means. A third hydraulic cylinder 23 is formed in the crosshead 13 and a normally retracted spring urged latch 24 is positioned in said third hydraulic cylinder 23 and a fluid passageway 29 extends from the third cylinder 23 to a source of hydraulic pressure (not shown). A separate passageway 26 extends from the opposite end of the secondary hydraulic cylinder 17 to a source of iluid pressure (not shown). It will thus be seen that the stem 18 may be extended and retracted by properly directing fluid pressure into the respective ends of the secondary cylinder 17 and that when the stern 18 is in extended position as shown in FIGURE l fluid pressure admitted to the fluid passageway 29 will actuate the latch 24 and bring the same into registry with a keeper slot 2S in the stern so that the stem is held stationary relative to the ram 12 and crosshead 13. Fluid pressure directed to the cylinder 11 against the rarn 12 will therefore be exerted by' the ram 12 against the stem 18 and the same is therefore capable of imparting extruding action to a billet in the container V15 adjacent the die 16. It will thus be observed that the overall length of the extrusion press disclosed herein may be approximately one-third shorter than has heretofore been necessary and it will be also observed that in changing a billet, the stem 1S may be quickly retracted as hereinbefore described to provide the necessary clearance for changing the billet. While the billet changing'operation is proceeding, the main ram 12 may be retracted thereby achieving a considerable time savings in that the time for retracting the ram 12 is running concurrently with the time used in changing the billet rather than successively.
It will thus be seen that a hydraulic extrusion press has been disclosed which meets the several objects of the invention, and having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

In a hydraulic extrusion press, a main cylinder, a ram reciprocally mounted in said cylinder, a source of hydraulic fluid pressure for moving said ram relative to said cylinder, a die stand, a billet container for a billet to be extruded adjacent said die stand, a die removably positioned in said die stand, and a stem for said ram arranged to apply extrusion pressure to said billet in said billet container to extrude the same through said die, said stem reciprocally mounted in a cylinder formed axially of said ram and means for moving said stern relative to said ram and means for securing said stem relative to said ram.

A hydraulic extrusion press comprising a base, a main cylinder on said base, a ram in said main cylinder for movementv relative thereto, a die stand secured to said base and cylinder in spaced relation thereto, a billet container in said die stand for a billet to be extruded and a stem for conveying movement of said ram to said billet, said stem retractably mounted in said ram, a source of fluid pressure in communication with said main cylinder lfor imparting movement to said ram and mechanical means for imparting movement to said stem relative to said ram and means for releasably latching said stem in ixed relation to said ram.
4. In a hydraulic extrusion press, a main cylinder, a ram mounted for movement in and out of said main cylinder, a die stand in spaced relation to said main cylinder, a billet container in said die stand in axial algnment with said ram arranged to position a billet to be extruded, an extrusion die in said die stand, tie rods interconnecting said cylinder and said die stand, a second cylinder formed in said ram axially thereof, a stem movably mounted in said second cylinder arranged to deliver extruding motion and pressure to a billet in said billet container, a cross head on said ram slidably engaging said tie rods, said stem positioned through an opening in said cross head, a latch mechanism in said cross head for engaging said stem and holding it relative to said ram, a source of iluid pressure in communication with said cylinder for moving said ram, a second source of uid pressure in communication with said second cylinder for moving said stem, and means for Y retracting said ram and means for retracting said stem.

IN A HYDRAULIC EXTRUSION PRESS, A MAIN CYLINDER, A RAM RECIPROCALLY MOUNTED IN SAID CYLINDER, A SOURCE OF HYDRAULIC FLUID PRESSURE FOR MOVING SAID RAM RELATIVE TO SAID CYLINDER, A DIE STAND, A BILLET CONTAINER FOR A BILLET TO BE EXTRUDED ADJACENT SAID DIE STAND, A DIE REMOVABLY POSITIONED IN SAID DIE STAND, AND A STEM FOR SAID RAM ARRANGED TO APPLY EXTRUSION PRESSURE TO SAID BILLET IN SAID BILLET CONTAINER TO EXTRUDE THE SAME THROUGH SAID DIE, SAID STEM RECIPROCALLY MOUNTED IN A CYLINDER FORMED AXIALLY OF SAID RAM AND MEANS FOR MOVING SAID STEM RELATIVE TO SAID RAM AND MEANS FOR SECURING SAID STEM RELATIVE TO SAID RAM.
