Abstract

771,047. Making race rings. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. Oct. 15, 1955, No. 29455/55. Class 83 (2). A race ring is made by soft-forming, heattreating to form a hardened working surface or surfaces, rough grinding, part finish grinding to leave the ring slightly oversize, mechanically pre-stressing to cause a permanent set to occur therein and then completing the finish grinding so as to remove superficial distortions caused by the permanent set. A partly finish ground twotrack tapered ring 1 is mounted between tapered rolls 7, 8 and slave rings 9, 10 surrounding a cylindrical member 11 adapted to be rotated from a shaft 18 and friction member 19, while rotation of the ring 1 is prevented by the engagement of arms 21, 22. Pressure is applied to the assembly by an hydraulic ram 27 which may be given a number of positions, as shown by the broken lines on the Figure. The apparatus may be used to treat two single-track rings placed back-to-back or the ring 1 may be a slave ring and the rings 9 and 10 the actual bearing rings to be treated.
