The yarn guides of a circular machine are operated by rockers 4, from a cam drum 2, through levers 8 in a similar fashion to that described in Specification 738,737, the rockers being depressed periodically by fingers 29, 30 mounted on a rotatable shaft 10, so as to effect patterning. To control the shaft 10, particularly in the case of a machine having main and auxiliary feeders where it is desirable to effect operation on the rockers of the main feeder without influencing those at the auxiliary feeder, a lever 23 is provided which either tensions or comprises a spring 26 or 24 to effect rotation of the shaft 10 in one direction or the other but which shaft is held against rotation by catches until they are released. For this purpose the lever 23 slidably engages a plate 21 on the shaft 10 and between which and the end of the lever the coil spring 24 is mounted on the lever so as to be compressed when the lever is moved in one direction. Also attached to the plate 21 and end of the lever 23 is the coil spring 26 which is tensioned when the lever is moved in a opposite direction. Catch plates 12 and 19 are also secured at opposite ends of the shaft 10 and have pins 13 and 20 which are adapted to engage a slot 38 and projection 46 respectively on spring-biased levers 35 and 40. Consequently, when the lever 23 is moved in either direction to compress a tension spring 24 or 26, the subsequent movement is not imparted to the shaft 10 until one or other of the levers 38 or 40 are influenced to release the respective catch plate. In a two-feeder machine in which the actuating mechanism is common to both feeders it is therefor possible to operate one set of feeders without affecting the other.
