Abstract

385,145. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, Rhode Island, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Lawson, R. H. ; 55, Cooke Street, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) March 8, 1932, No. 6921. Convention date, March 9, 1931. [Class 74 (ii).] In knitting - machines adapted to perform a sequence of operations in timed relation, means are provided whereby the machine can be stopped automatically in the event of proper timed relation between the operations not being maintained. The invention is described in connection with a circular rib knitting machine wherein cam shafts 3, 11, Fig. 4, are employed respectively to control the knitting of plain fabric and rib fabric, the stop motion becoming operative when the shafts are out of phase, or in the event of the dial cam being projected during reverse strokes of reciprocating knitting. The main cam shaft 3, which is rotated every four courses, carries a drum 7 which is provided with cams 15 for engaging and rocking a pivotally mounted bell-crank lever 16, engagement of the latter with a second rocking lever 17 causing a pawl 18 to advance the rib shaft 11 and bring the ratchet 19 within the stroke of a constantly reciprocating pawl 21. A cam drum 14 on the shaft 11 is provided with pins or screws 66 which are so positioned that, when the shafts and cams are operating correctly, one of the pins will engage an extension of a plate 57 and rock a lever 54 about its pivot 55. Rocking of the lever 54 causes a pin thereon to engage the forked arm 44 of a lever 43 and swing the other arm 42 so that it moves a lever 38 into the position shown in Fig. 4. When the shafts are out of phase the absence of a pin 66 leaves the rod 38 in a position in which a lug 63 will be engaged by a pin or screw 62 on the drum 7, whereupon the rod 38 will be lowered and an arm 35 thereon will engage a detent 26 to effect stoppage. The detent 26, Fig. 5, is pivotally mounted on an auxiliary bracket 271 on the belt shipping bracket 27 and is normally held by the engagement of a notch 29 with a plate 30. When the detent is lowered the bracket 271 is free to move under the influence of a spring 31 and carry the belt from the fast to the loose pulley. The stop motion may be used in combination with another stop motion (not shown) which includes the detent 26 and belt shipping mechanism 27. Specification 20101/09, [Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.], is referred to.
