Yarn lever controlling mechanism for a circular independent needle machine comprises a rotatable drum having a plurality of cam rows, a rocker adapted to act as a follower of a cam row and operatively coupled to the yarn lever and an auxiliary rocker adapted to be operated by another cam row of the drum connecting means being provided between the two rockers so that the first rocker may at times be operated by the auxiliary rocker. Yarn levers 1-8 are rocked up out of action by cam rows on a drum 28 acting through rockers 18-25 and levers 9-16 and additionally, yarn levers 1, 2, 5 and 6 may be subject to the control of auxiliary rockers 58, 59, 65, 66, connected with rockers 18, 19, 22, 23 by pins such as 60 entering slots in the latter rockers. In the position of Fig. 1, rocker 55 overlies a cam or cams 62 on the drum and rocker 65 is off the drum and inoperative. To vary the yarn lever selection, drum 28 may be shogged by a pattern-controlled cam 48 acting against a return-spring'49. Rockers 58, 59 are shoggable with shaft 57, on which they are pivoted, and rockers 65, 66 are shoggable along shaft 57 with a sleeve 71 on which they are carried. Shaft 57 and sleeve 71 are shogged by cams on a drum 73, acting through linkwork. The rockers 20, 21, 24, 25 can be depressed, to over-ride this operation, by fingers 102-105 carried on a shaft 101 rocked by a cam 108 on drum 73. A further over-riding control is provided by wires 118 connecting levers 9-16 to, say, a drum. The drum 73 is mounted on an extension of a pattern drum 100 and both are turned by a drum 112 mounted on the same shaft as drum 28 and bearing rollers 113 which operate a rocker 114 and so a pawl 116 coacting with a ratchet 117 on the drum 100.
