Abstract

542,036. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO. June 21, 1940, No. 10731. Convention date, July 12, 1939: [Class 74 (ii)] Each yarn-feeding lever 12 of a circular machine comprises a thin element having a lateral aperture 14 through which the yarn is passed and of reduced thickness in the region of the aperture. The invention is described in connection with a horizontal striping device for a hosiery machine in which ten yarn - feeding levers are provided. Each lever 12 is moved into operative position by a spring 15 and is held in inoperative position. by a plunger 22. A controlling lever 23 is arranged to actuate each plunger, and spring - controlled latches 35 are provided to restrain the levers 23 corresponding to all of the levers 12 supplying patterning yarns. Each latch 35 has a notched end 37 to engage a pin 26 on its lever 23, and a hammer member 44 is mounted upon a plate 41 secured to a shaft 33 axially movable under pattern control so as to bring the member 44 into alignment with a selected latch 35. The shaft 33 is also rocked so that first the selected latch 35 is actuated to release its lever 23, so that the corresponding yarn-feeding lever 12 is moved by its spring into operative position, and subsequently the plate 41 depresses the lever 23 corresponding to the yarn to be withdrawn so that the pin 26 can be engaged and locked by the released latch 36. To ensure alignment of the hammer member 44 and a selected latch 36, a sector 48 carried by the shaft 33 engages one of a series of V-shaped notches 47 in a roller 46 fixed axially upon a shaft 50. The shaft 33 is rocked by the engagement of pins 63, 64 upon a bell-crank lever 65, Fig. 8, with a pin 62 extending between lugs 60, 61 upon the shaft 33. The lever 65 is connected by a link 68 to a bell-crank lever 70, one end of which engages pins 74 upon the usual 104-wheel. The axial position of the shaft 33 is determined by stops of varying heights upon one edge of a pattern chain 82, collars 99, 100 on the shaft 33 embracing a lever 101 coupled by a link 105 to a bell-crank lever 106, one arm of which engages the successive stops. Levers 12 for supplying non-patterning yarns, e.g. for heel and toe work, may be controlled directly from the main pattern drum, levers engaging cams on the drum being connected to the controlling levers 23 by the usual wires. One such wire 10<SP>1</SP> may be connected to a bell-crank lever 27 so as to move all the levers supplying patterning yarns to inoperative position. Yarn trapping and severing mechanism operated from the pattern drum in the usual manner may be provided, and a second series of stops upon the chain 82 serves to actuate the trapping and severing mechanism upon the introduction and withdrawal of patterning yarns. To reduce the number of kinds of links required for the pattern chain 82, the stops of varying height for actuating the shaft 33 are formed integrally with the link, and the stops for actuating the yarn trapping and severing mechanism comprise studs which may be screwed into the links where they are required. Specification 20101/09, [Class 74 (ii)], is referred to.
