769,977. Intake silencers. KNECHT, A. May 13, 1955 [May 14, 1954], No. 13912/55. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A combined silencer and air filter for motorcycle engines comprises a casing in two parts 5, 6 held together by quick-acting clamps 15, one of the parts acting as a silencer, and an annular filter insert 1 of paper folded to form radially-disposed pleats, the periphery of the filter being protected by an annular, metal sleeve 3 having turned-over edges 2, and the central opening of the filter being closed by an insert such as a cap 10, or a plug of paper. As shown in Fig. 1, the filter is gripped between the silencer part 5 and the cover 6 which is provided with openings 9 the flow of air through which is controlled by an apertured plate 8 rotatable by a handle 7. A funnelshaped part 11 carrying a tube 13 provided with rows of holes 12 guides the air into the part 5, the air leaving the latter via a pipe 14. In modifications (a) the cover 20, Fig. 4, forms, together with an insert 21, an air duct 22 acting as a silencer, and (b) the bowlshaped, lower part 26, Fig. 5, of the casing in conjunction with the space between the top surface of the filter 1 and apertured choke disc 31 acts as a silencer.
