Abstract

769,616. Joining structural members. FENTIMAN & SONS, Ltd., F. April 1, 1955 Aug. 16, 1954; Jan. 31, 1955], No. 9533/55. Class 20(2) Trusses, frames, girders &c. are composed of a plurality of metal tubes 5, Fig. 3, interconected by means of hubs 1. The tubes have flattened ends 6 shaped for keylike engagement in correspondingly shaped slots 3 in the hubs, the tubes being retained therein by means which overlap the open ends of the slots 3, such as a washer 8, Fig. 4, or an adjacent hub 1a secured by a bolt passing through an axial hole in the hub or hubs. The tubes may extend normally to the hub axes as shown by the tubes 5 on which the key formations 7 are at right angles to the axis of the tube, or may be inclined with respect to the hub axis as shown by the tubes 5a on which the key formations 7a, Fig. 5, are inclined to the axis of the tube. The hubs 1a which accommodate inclined tubes 5a are of greater length than the hubs 1 which accommoate the tubes 5 extending normally to the hub axis. The slots 3, or the tube ends, may be formed so that the struts extend at an angle to the radial direction. In a modification, the hub 11, Fig. 10 has a dished end 18 which receives feet 26, Fig. 13, formed at an angle on the ends of inclined struts 13, the feet 26 serving to block the ends of the slots in the hub in which the ends of tubes 12 are engaged, a nut and bolt 28 serving to secure both the tubes 12 and the tubes 13.
