In a chest-of-drawers or the like having a plurality of slidably arranged drawers 11, each of the drawers is provided with a swingable locking hook 14 adapted to engage a locking member 20 which is common to the plurality of drawers in order to lock the drawer in its closed position by such engagement, the common locking member being rotatable about such an axis that on its rotation into its unlocking position its locking surface 38 adapted to cooperate with the noses 16 of the locking hooks passes from a position at right angles to the sliding direction of the drawers to a position at such an angle to said direction that the locking surface 38 is lifted off the co-operating surfaces 39 of the hook noses and causes the looking hook of each drawer to slide from the locking surface 38 when the drawer is drawn to open it. As shown, the locking member is square in cross-section and from its locking position it is rotated anticlockwise through an angle of 45 degrees to its unlocking position so that only the tip of each hook 14 is in engagement with the locking surface 38. Each hook 14 is loaded by a spring 18 to its locking position and has an extension 17 which can abut against the rear face of the drawer 11 to limit rotation of the hook in its locking direction. The rear face 19 of each hook is tapered so that when the drawer is closed the hook is rotated against the pressure of its spring 18 by the engagement of the face 19 with the locking member so that in the fully closed position of the drawer it can snap behind the locking member. The movement of the hook takes place whether the locking member is in its locking or unlocking position. The locking member is rotated from the front of the chestof-drawers or the like by linkage and it is mounted on a pair of pins attached to the top and bottom of the chest or the like. The top pin is longer than the bottom pin and the arrangement is such that the locking member can be engaged with the top pin first and then by moving it downwardly with the bottom pin. It is retained in position by a cotter-pin fitting in a cross-bore in the top pin.
