Abstract

903,885. Drawers. CAMLOC FASTENER CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1959, No. 43620/59. Class 52 (1). [Also in Group XXV] A latching device for use in combination with the frame 10 of a cabinet having an opening and a drawer 12 slidably supported within the opening, comprises a latch and a keepr for securing the drawer within the frame, the latch comprising a bracket 14 and a latch handle 20 pivotally mounted, about an axis 16 adjacent one of its ends, at one end of the bracket, the handle having an extension forming a lever 29 beyond the pivot, the keeper having an opening therein to receive the lever; the bracket and keeper are provided with substantially flat rear faces which engage the front faces of the drawer and frame, respectively, and to which they are secured in aligned, juxtaposed relation, the lever 29 having a front camming surface 35 which engages a front wall of the keeper opening when the handle is rotated in one direction to urge the drawer into the frame and a rear camming surface 45 which reacts against a rear wall 44 of the keeper opening when the handle is rotated in the opposite direction to urge the drawer out of the frame. The keeper 42 is bifurcated to provide spaced ears 41 between which is the opening for receiving the lever 29 and the front wall of the opening is formed by a sleeve 36 carried on a pin 40 extending between the two ears 41. Carried telescopically on the handle 20 is an inverted L-shaped, spring-loaded sliding lock 25 having a horizontal portion 26 provided with a recess 30 for engaging a pin 24 disposed within an oval-shaped opening 23 in the bracket 14, the handle having an elongated slot 32 in which is engaged a pin 33 carried by the sliding lock, to limit vertical movement of the latter. The width of the keeper opening is only slightly more than the width of the lever 29 so as to prevent appreciable lateral movement between the drawer 12 and the frame 10 and the lever 29 is so disposed relative to the keeper as to prevent upward or downward relative movement between the drawer and the frame, when the lever 29 is engaged within the keeper opening. The handle 20 in its locked position, may serve as a carrying handle if the drawer is to be removed from the frame and transported and the handle may extend vertically instead of horizontally. The drawer may be provided with a latch device on each side thereof.
