Class 72 A conversion process, using during at least a part of the time an oxidizing gas containing at least 25 per cent of steam, comprises heating the blowing conduit prior to blowing, to a point close to and on the upstream side of the blowing valve to a temperature above 150‹C. by a gas containing less than 25 per cent steam and heating the blast to such a temperature that it is above 150‹C. immediately upstream of the blowing valve from the commencement of the second minute of blowing. As shown, a blowing line 6 may be heated by passing the products of combustion of a burner 16 from a combustion chamber 15 to an escape valve 5 situated on the upstream side of a blowing valve 4. The line 7 between the valve 4 and the windbox 3 of the converter and the windbox of the converter may also be heated before changing the converter by allowing the gas to pass the valve 4. The line 7 and the converter windbox may also be heated after changing if the conveter remains in the charging position.
