Abstract

767,124. Magnetic separators. JONES, G. H. March 21, 1955 [March 22, 1954], No. 8371/54. Class 117 A device for separating solid magnetic particles from a gas or liquid comprises a body portion 10 of magnetic material provided with a flange 18 and bored at each end to receive a pair of hollow shafts 12, 13 on which are threaded end members 16, 17. Permanent magnets 20-23 of annular form are mounted between the end members and the flange, and each magnet is provided with a grooved annular pole piece 26, an intermediate pole piece 28 being located between each pair of poles 26. Filling pieces 32 of non-magnetic material, e.g. wood or rubber, are provided between the magnets and the body 10 which has radial passages 34 connecting the gaps between the magnet poles with passages 33 of the shafts 12, 13. The separator is rotated and the fluid to be treated is delivered at low pressure into the gaps via the passages 33, 34, the magnetic particles being carried upwardly on the magnet poles and the liquid flowing out of the separator. Any non-magnetic matter adhering to the magnetic particles is removed by jets of air or water issuing from nozzles 38 Fig. 2 (not shown), after which the cleaned particles, in passing stronger jets from nozzles 40 Fig. 2 (not shown), are removed for collection. A modification Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) has an electromagnet of which the coil is energized via slip-rings and brushes. According to the Provisional Specification, the separator may comprise a cylindrical permanent. The magnetic-particle carrying fluid may be directed from a nozzle inwardly into the annular gap -in which case the separator shaft may be solid.
