Abstract

1,185,440. Magnetic separators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 30 Oct., 1968, No. 51486/68. Heading B2J. Magnetic printing powder which is coated with a heat fusible resin is separated from free resin particles by permanently magnetising the magnetic particles by placing them on a surface of a non-magnetic member and passing the member relative to a permanent magnet and subjecting the mixture to an alternating magnetic field and separating the free resin particles by causing relative movement of an electro-magnet in relation to the material. As shown an electro-magnet comprises a coil 20 wound round a hollow member 28 and provided with iron pole pieces 17. Powder is placed on a fluid permeable membrane and when the coil is energised by an A.C. supply the powder is agitated and the magnetised particles form regions 22. The free resin particles are expelled into a collection chamber by means of air inputs A, B. The material may be separated by passing an electromagnet over an open-topped non-magnetic container which contains the material at one end.
