Abstract

1447264 Permanent magnets; magnetization MAGNETIC POLYMERS Ltd 12 Nov 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 52777/73 Heading H1P A permanent magnet is fabricated by finely powdering a magnetizible alloy, e.g. ferrite, alnico, or rare earth alloy; admixing the powder with a plastic synthetic resin binder; and pouring the mixture at 1 into a non-magnetic die 2 with surrounding electromagnetic coils 5, 6; a pulse magnetization and heating coil 7, and pressure rams 3, 4 of magnetic material. Initially the pulverulent material is subjected to a pulsed high value magnetic field by energization of coil 7 to saturate and orientate the magnetic particles and then a steady lower intensity field in the same direction from coils 5, 6 while applying high pressure over rams 3, 4. Simultaneously the magnetic powder is heated by RF excitation of coil 7 so as to fuse the plastic binder. Thereafter the coil 7 is deonergized and the compacted magnet is cooled and removed. The alloy may contain samarium, praesodymium, lanthanum, cerium, neodymium and cobalt and the binder may be an epoxy resin.
