Abstract
1506053 Moulding magnets MAGNETIC POLYMERS Ltd 7 May 1976 [31 May 1975] 23746/75 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] Apparatus for moulding a magnet comprises upper and lower magnetic cores between which is a non-magnetic removable mould plate 12; the upper core being vertically movable by an hydraulic ram 14; the surfaces of the cores defining walls of a cavity 15 in which the mould plate is disposed, which is bounded by non- magnetic sidewalls 16 abutting mould cheeks 17 when the mould is closed. The cores are surrounded by coils 10, 11 and contain heater coils 20, 21. Magnetically conducting tiebars 23, 24 connect magnetically conducting end plate 22 to bed 13. The mould plate contains 36 square holes which are charged with a composition of SmCo 5 alloy powder with a thermosetting polyester resin binder. Ram pressure is applied while the apparatus is heated, while a magnetic field is applied to the composition by energizing coils 18, 19 to align the magnetic particle remains. A modified mould plate (Fig. 2, not shown) enables injection or transfer moulding to be employed to form the magnets, and other cobalt rare earth alloy powders e.g. Mischmetall Co 5 , PrCo 5 , Sm 2 Co 17 , SmCo 5 , PrSmCo 5 may be used. Also strontium ferrite, AlNiCoFe alloy, iron oxide, or electrolytic soft iron powders may be used. The binder resin may be a thermoplastic polymer.
