Abstract
758,320. Magnetic compositions. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Nov. 30, 1954 [Nov. 30, 1953], No. 34697/54. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group V] A material exhibiting permanent magnetism comprises particles of a substance having the formula MeO, xFe 2 0 3 , where Me is lead, strontium or barium and x lies between 3 and 8 held together by an organic binder. Preferably, x lies between 5 and 7. Between 2 and 30 per cent by weight of the binder may be mixed with 70 to 90 per cent by weight of the magnetic substance, the favoured proportions of binder being between 8 and 15 per cent. To make a suitable material BaCO 3 is mixed with Fe 2 O 3 , the mixture is ground, sintered, reground, sifted, mixed with the binder, inserted in a mould subjected to a magnetic field, compressed and heated to polymerize the binder. The binder may be thermosetting or thermoplastic, e.g. a phenoplast, amino-plast, acrylic resin, polyester or phenolic resin. The substance sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Araldite " may be used. The final moulding may be done in a non-magnetic steel body 1, the mixture being inserted in a cavity 5 between two hardened steel arms 8, 9, forming the poles of a soft magnetic circuit energized by both D.C. and A.C., the field produced by the latter causing the magnetic particles to vibrate and thereby assisting their turning under the influence of the field of the former.
