Abstract
860,220. Magnetic compositions; magnets; magnetizing apparatus. LEYMAN CORPORATION. June 23, 1959 [July 15, 1958], No. 21504/59. Classes 35 and 38 (2). A magnetizable material is made by dispersing fine, magnetically anisotropic particles in a resinous or plastic base material, subjecting the dispersion to a shear stress to align the particles, and hardening or allowing to harden the base material. The magnetic material may be barium, strontium or lead ferrite (e.g. BaFe 12 O 19 ) or single domain iron particles. The base material may be rubber, polyethylene, plasticized p.v.c. or may be a thermosetting material. The shear may be imparted by passing through an orifice or by rolling between rollers 2, 3 which may rotate at different speeds to give a sheet 0.03 inch thick. The sheets so formed may be cut, stacked, compressed, cured and magnetized to form permanent magnets. In an example, barium ferite is formed by firing a mixture of BaCO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 at 1250‹ C. for 1 hour and milled to domain size, i.e. 0.5 Á. This is included in a rubber mixture which contains vulcanizers and accelerators and passed through the rollers. The magnetic powder comprises not more than 70% of the volume of the dispersion. As shown in Fig. 3, strips 40 of uncured material are compressed in a mould 42 between members 43 and heated to cure, the members 43 also acting as polepieces for magnetizing the body.
