Abstract
1,070,729. Magnetic structures. LEYMAN CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1963, No. 45225/63. Heading H1H. In a method of making a permanent magnet somewhat similar to that disclosed in Specification 860,220, anisotropic magnetic particles are admixed or dispersed in a non-magnetic matrix material and the admixture is divided into granules, these granules then being subjected to a shear force to form an elongated body whilst at the same time the particles are moved so that their axes are parallel or coplanar. The magnetic material may be Ba, Sr or Pb ferrite or single domain iron, the former being plate like and the latter elongated. The matrix may be a solid, semi-solid, or viscous liquid, and examples include rubber, resin, plastic elastomer or metal materials. In one example 16.76 1b. of barium ferrite is ground to single domain size, and 1À295 1b. of uncured rubber is softened by rollers. These are mixed at a temperature below 300‹ F., 25.5 gm. of wax and 6.5 gm. of stearic acid are added, and the admixture is granulated to a size which will pass a 20-mesh screen. The material is then passed through rollers providing a shear force and forming an extended sheet in which the particles are orientated. The rollers may rotate at different speeds. The sheets so formed may be stacked to form blocks. The sheets or blocks are then cured by a conventional vulcanizing process, e.g. heating for 12 minutes at 278‹ F., cut to shape, and magnetized to form a permanent magnet.
