Abstract

1280538 Magnetic compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 23 June 1969 [21 June 1968] 31677/69 Heading H1H [Also in Division C7] A magnetic powder is prepared by treating particles of a cobalt-rare earth compound with zinc or arsenic in liquid or vapour form. The compound is for example Co 5 Y, Co 5 Sm, or Co 5 M where M is cerium-rich mischmetal. The powder may be treated first with a mixture of acids and then mixed with zinc and heated; alternatively the powder may be heated in a quartz tube on the inside wall of which zinc is deposited. Heating takes place in a vacuum or in a stream of hydrogen or helium. The zinc or arsenic forms a film on the surface of the particles or diffuses into the surface and so stabilizes the magnetic properties, especially the coercive force. The powder may be bonded with epoxy resin, elastomers, or non-magnetic metals to form permanent magnets.
