Abstract

1299157 Magnetic composition TH GOLDSCHMIDT AG 2 Sept 1970 [2 Sept 1969] 42084/70 Headings C3B B1L4H BC1 BC33A BL3A BL5X and BA A permanent magnet is made of different-sized magnetically anisotropic particles bonded together, and consisting of (a) a fraction of substantially uniform particle size and a mean particle size of 50-250Á; (b) a fraction of substantially uniform particle size and a mean particle size of 7-50Á and (c) either particles of mean particle size <12Á or a non-magnetic inorganic or organic binder, e.g. a ductile and/or low-melting metal or a polymer. The ratio of the mean particle sizes of (a) to (b) and of (b) to particles (c) each lie between 7 : 1 and 4 : 1, and the proportions by weight of (a), (b) and (c) are chosen to give optimum packing density e.g. (a) : (b) : (c) may be 7 : 3 : 1. Particles (a) may be a precipitation-hardened Co/rare earth metal alloy containing 10-25 atomic per cent rare earth metal, balance Co, or Co and Cu, Fe or Mn. Particles (b) may be an alloy as (a) or a rare earth/ Co 5 compound, e.g. SmCos, PrCos or YCo 5 . Particles (c) may be as (a) or (b) or may be a Ba or Sr ferrite. The magnetic particles may be aligned and bonded by sintering, compaction or by an organic or inorganic binder. The rare earth/cobalt alloys may be tempered by a surface treatment, e.g. immersion in a Ni bath, by an acid treatment or by deposition of tin on the particle surface and diffusion into the particle. In Example (6) SmCo 3.5 Cu 1.5 (149-250Á and 37-53Á) and SmCo 5 (7Á) are mixed, impregnated with acetone and compacted in a mould while in a directional magnetic field. In (7) a pressed block as in (6) is impregnated in vacuo with curable epoxy resin. In (8) the SmCo 5 fraction of (6) is replaced by tin powder, and no liquid is used in the moulding, but the press mould is hammered to facilitate alignment of the magnetic particles. In (9) 3 size fractions of MMCo 3 Cu 2 are mixed, compacted and pressed in a magnetic field. In (10) a magnetic tile is pressed from methyl methacrylate, MMCo 3 Cu 2 , MMCos and barium ferrite. In (11) a mixture of SmCo 3.5 Cu 1.5 , MMCo 3 Cu 2 and PrCo 5 is pressed.
