Abstract

1392915 Sintered samarium-cobalt permanent magnets SOC D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES MAGNETIQUES 18 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 18778/73 Heading C7D Sintered Sm-Co magnets such as SmCO 5 and Sm 2 CO 7 are produced by compacting the powdered alloy in a magnetic field presintering the compact at 600-1000‹C, sintering e.g. at 1050-1150‹C, annealing e.g. at 900‹C for 5-48 hours and then quenching the compact e.g. in water, from the annealing temperature and this increases the coercivity of the magnet. The Sm-CO alloy preferably contains 34-42% Sm and is produced by heating Co to 1500‹C, cooling to 1100‹C and adding the Sm. The alloy is crushed to 4 micron and may be mixed with a lubricant prior to compacting at 2T/cm2 in a magnetic field of 10-15K oersteds parallel to the direction of pressing. Presintering, sintering and annealing are carried out under He or A and prior to presintering and annealing the compact is coated with a Sm alloy having a higher melting point than the alloy compact.
