Abstract

1415772 Magnetic particles GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 22 March 1973 [17 April 1972] 13997/73 Heading C7A Particles of Co-Sm 34-38% alloy having a particle size of 50-200Á with good magnetic properties, are produced by (i) casting the alloy melt to give a body having a grain size of 100- 1000Á; (ii) annealing the body at from 900‹ C up to 1200 C for 5 mins, to 24 hours in an inert atmosphere and (iii) comminuting the body to give particles with a size of 50-200Á at least 85% of which are single crystal particles. The order of steps (ii) and (iii) may be reversed. The annealing conditions are such that the particles can show, after magnetization to at least within 10% of full saturation magnetization, at room temperature, a relative magnetization 4#J/Br of at least 50% at a demagnetizing field of -4 bilo-oersteds. The particles may be incorporated in a non-magnetic matrix (e.g. plastic, elastomer, metal or wax) which is solidified under the influence of an orienting field of at least 4 bilo-oersteds.
