Abstract
762,163. Magnetic separators. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 30, 1954 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 37659/54. Class 117 A magnetic separator for a contaminated medium, e.g. oil, comprises a cylindrical permanent magnet 1 provided with pole plates 3, 4 and situated externally of a housing 6, 7, 8, 9 through which the medium passes, the parts 6, 9 being of non- magnetic material while parts 7, 8, and plates. 3, 4 are of high permeability material. Pole members 13 made of corrugated strip material, e.g. soft iron, are secured to a non-magnetic cylindrical member 17 located between soft iron annular pole plates 14, 15, the latter plate being mounted on a rotatable member 11. When the ferromagnetic particles are to be cleared from air-gaps 16 between the pole members 13, the medium remaining in the separator is drained away via an outlet 20. The magnet 1 is then raised clear of the housing so that the particles are readily removed by means of a cleaning medium, e.g. water, supplied via one or more tubes 23, Fig. 2. Jets of the medium thus issue from one or more apertures 24 and strike the pole members 13 which are caused to rotate while the air-gaps 16 are cleaned by jets from aperture(s) 25. A plug 22 may be replaced by a valve which is automatically closed by a float when the housing is filled. Instead of removing the magnet to release the particles, its poles may be short-circuited.
