Abstract
Permanent magnets are made from an alloy consisting of: Al 6-11 per cent; Ni 10-30 per cent; Co 12-30 per cent; Cn 0.5-8 per cent; other optional additions (e.g. Nb 0.5-3.25 per cent) and impurities up to 5 per cent in total; Fe the remainder, by casting the alloy with an addition of 0.16-0.81 per cent Ce and/or La, hot working the casting into a bar having the required magnet cross-section and dividing the bar into the required magnet lengths. Mischmetal may be used to make the Ce/La addition and a preferred mischmetal composition has a Ce/La ratio of about 2. The hot working step may be performed by first forging and then rolling.
