Abstract
766,618. Cooling systems for electric discharge tubes. TELEFUNKEN GES. Feb. 16, 1955 [Sept. 14, 1954], No. 4593/55. Class 64(3) In a cooling system for an electric discharge tube 1, in which the tube is cooled by evaporation of a cooling liquid, a conduit 7 for drawing off the vapour so formed is made at least in part of an insulating material having approximately the same dielectric constant as the cooling liquid so as to cause the potential distribution along said conduit, due to the difference in potential applied between its ends, to be substantially unaffected by the deposition on the surface thereof of drops of cooling liquid. Preferably the cooling liquid is water and the conduit 7 is made of a ceramic material having a dielectric constant of approximately 80. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the valve anode 2 projects into a cooling chamber 3 to which water from a condenser 9 is fed through a pipe 4. An outer container 5 surrounds the chamber 3 and water vapour from the chamber 3 passes through the container 5 and the draw-off conduit 7 to a steam separator 8 the steam from which is passed to the condenser 9. The water from the condenser supplemented if necessary by make up water from a separate supply is fed back to the cooling chamber 3 to complete the cycle. The conduit 7 may alternatively comprise a glass tube through which the vapour flows and containing a rod or cylinder of material of the required dielectric constant.
