Abstract

308,382. Brunner, F. von. Dec. 29, 1927. Hydro-electric and like machines.-Electricity is generated by vaporizing a liquid, such as mercury, water or ammonia, and condensing the vapour in a device having means for leading the desired charge to the point of consumption, either the liquid or vapour or both being initially charged from a separate source of electricity. The condensate is returned to the vaporizer and a stream of air, gas or steam may be used to accelerate the passage of the electrified vapour from. the vaporizer to the condenser. In the form shown, the liquid 3 is evaporated by a flame E in a vessel A which communicates through a pipe 4 with a condenser B immersed in a cooler C, the vessels &c. being preferably made of or lined with badly-conducting materials. Metal plates 1, 1<a> in the two vessels serve respectively to convey the initial charge to the liquid from an electrostatic machine or Leyden jar apparatus D and to convey the desired charges to the consumption circuits, the system of these plates being completed through equalizing pairs of pointed conductors 14, 15 and 16, 17. The condensate flows back into the vessel A through a pipe 18 and funnel 19 with an intervening air-gap. The passage of the vapour through the pipe 4 mav be assisted by a stream of compressed air or the like introduced at 8, the spent accelerating medium being removed by a device not shown on the drawings. The initial charge from the source D may be applied to the vapour by a point-discharge device 7 instead of being given to the liquid at 1. The voltage of the desired charges is controlled by regulating the accelerating medium. the distance between the conductors 14, 15 and the temperature difference between the vaporizer and condenser. The quantity of the charge is determined by the size of the heating and cooling areas.
