766,046. Making magnets; casting-processes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 14, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 34763/53. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2). A method of manufacturing anisotropic permanent magnets from an iron-base alloy containing Ni, Al and Co, comprises cooling the two pole-faces, as by metal chill-plates 3, 4, during casting of the alloy in a mould 1 and, after solidification, dividing the magnet, e.g. by a sharp tap with a hammer, along the melting plane 7 of the two solidification fronts. A ring 2 of an aluminium-containing chemicallyexothermic material provided in the sand mould 1 in the proximity of the plane 7 may be pre-ignited by high-frequency induction, or by the liquid alloy poured through the channel 5.
