[Also in Groups XXV and XXX] A knockdown box has its sides hinged either removably or permanently to the base, and in addition to the hinging means, interengaging male and female elements on both the side and base adjacent edges, the elements being formed by castellations. The side and top edges of the sides have similar elements. The hinging means may consist of modified piano hinges, strips of flexible metal secured to the base and sides, rods passing through aligned staples in the adjacent base and side edges, staples driven with one limb in a side and the other in the base, or plates such as 41, 42 with interengaging curled edges 43, 44, Fig. 14. A rod may pass through the edges 43, 44 to act as a hinge pin. The sides are clipped at their adjacent edges by angle strips 33 having flanges 34 engaging grooves 35 in the sides, Fig. 4. A lid 36, Fig. 5, may be held by similar strips 37 or a continuous strip mitred at the bends may be used. Alternatively, the lid may be hinged on one side and have a catch formed of a curled metal strip engaging a similar strip on a side wall, after the fashion of the elements 43, 44. A combination of a hinge with strips 37 and a catch may be used. The end walls may be extended downwardly to provide space for the tines of a lift truck. The box may be rendered siftproof or waterproof by strips of rubber &c. of circular section held in grooves in the abutting edges of the walls or by rubber strips 53 secured to the projecting castellations 17 along the inner edges of some of the walls, the parts joining the castellations being pressed between them by castellations of the adjacent walls, Fig. 15 (not shown). Parts for boxes may be manufactured by cutting rectangular zig-zag patterns three quarters way through the thickness of a sheet of hardboard, securing hinge members over the cuts and trimming away the remaining quarter by passing the sheet over a circular saw, thus separating the various panels.
