Abstract

In the process for the production of a dialdehyde or dialcohol according to the parent Specification, by subjecting dicyclopentadiene or a similar cyclic diolefin to the addition of CO and H2 in the oxo reaction, at below 300 atmospheres pressure, and, if desired, hydrogenating the products to alcohols, the diluent used comprises one or more saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons not completely miscible with the products of the reaction. In examples, the reaction described is performed using as solvent heptane, giving as products after hydrogenation the tricyclodecane dimethylol, and tricyclodecane-methylol, the initial products being the corresponding methylal and dimethylal. Tricyclodecane carboxylic acid is also obtained.
