Abstract

The invention comprises 3b -hydroxy-6-methyl-pregna-5, 16-dien-20-one and its corresponding 3b -acyloxy derivatives, 3b -hydroxy-6-methylpregn-5-en-20-one and its corresponding 3b -acyloxy derivatives, and 6-methyl-25D-furosta-5, 20-diene-3b ,26-diol and its 3,26-diacyloxy derivatives, and a process for the preparation of 6-methyl-25D-furosta-5,20-diene-3b ,26-diol by degrading 3b -acyloxy-6-methyl-25D-spirost-5-en by a known method for degrading a spirostan to a furosta-20-en-26-ol to form a diacyl derivative of 6-methyl-25D-furosta-5,20-diene-3b ,26-diol and hydrolysing this compound under alkaline conditions, a process for the preparation of 3b -acyloxy-6-methylpregna-5,16-dien-20-one by acylating 6-methyl-25D-furosta-5,20-diene-3b , 26-diol and oxidising the resulting acyl derivative with a chromic acid derivative, and a process for the preparation of 3b -hydroxy-6-methylpregn-5-en-20-one by partially hydrogenating and then hydrolysing 3b -acyloxy-6-methylpregna-5,16-dien-20-one e.g. by catalytically hydrogenating at 1 to 2 atmospheres pressure employing palladium on calcium carbonate as catalyst and then hydrolysing with aqueous methanolic potassium carbonate. The acyloxy groups in all the above compounds contain up to 10 carbon atoms. Detailed examples are given. Specification 841,870 is referred to.
