The invention comprises 17a -lower alkyl-19-nor-androstan-17b -ol-3-ones in which the alkyl group contains not more than six carbon atoms, and a process for their preparation together with that of 19-nor-androstan-17b -ol-3-one by preparing the 3-ethylene ketal of the corresponding D 4-3-keto-androstene compounds, by reaction with ethylene glycol in the presence of an acid catalyst, hydrogenating the ketal in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. palladium, to form the saturated allo compound and finally hydrolysing the ethylene ketal group, preferably with p-toluene sulphonic acid in acetone. In an example: 17a -methyl-19-nor-testosterone is refluxed with ethylene glycol and p-toluene sulphonic acid, and the resulting 3-ethylene ketal hydrogenated over palladium-charcoal giving the ethylene ketal of 17a -methyl-19-nor-androstan-17b -ol-3-one from which the free ketone is isolated by hydrolysis with p-toluene sulphonic acid in acetone. The corresponding 17a -ethyl-, 17a -propyl- and parent 19-nor-androstan-17b -ol-3-one compounds are similarly prepared.
